Photos documenting 31 July 1952 MiG attack on VP 731 Crew 11 in PBM-5S2 buno59277 Tail number SF 5

AC was on Fox Blue radar monitoring and visual patrol CCW around Yellow Sea. Flight originated at Fukoka Japan on 31 July. Flight was attacked in NW area of Yellow Sea by 2 MiG -15s in Chinese markings. Crew was able to fly east across Yellow Sea to Paengnyong-do Korea (site of small electronics listening site still in use today) where it was beached in shallow bay at low tide for repairs and transfer of casualties. Two crewmembers were killed and two wounded (see articles in album. AC was flown to Iwakuni Japan on Aug 2 1952 and on to Oppama Japan on Aug 9 where it was turned in to maintenance depot for repairs. AC is reported to have been assigned to VP-50 during their 1953 deployment to Iwakuni.

Flight originated from tender at Fukuoka Japan. Attack occured about 5 hrs into mission; mission aborted to Paengnyong-do Korea where there was (and still is) a US / UN electronic listening post (about 1 hour flt time). Total flt time 6.2 hrs.

I have heard a report that wing spar was severely damaged -- perhaps at this location -- and that maint depot personnel didn't understand why wing didn't fail.

Note that the port elevator fabric is shot up. Compare to the two photos of this same surface taken back at Iwakuni which show the fabric intact. Could this elevator have been replaced in the field?
